On the macroeconomics of transition and the search for clarity

Published 2024 – As part of the Earth4All project, collaborators have submitted deep-dive papers to delve further into the issues and solutions needed to transform our economic system and provide an equitable future for all on a finite planet. 

This is the second paper in a series of three on the concept of a universal basic dividend (UBD), authored by Ken Webster. This paper aims to provide clarity on the implications of grounding a UBD in ethical and moral considerations, as well as to explore how a UBD fits within current macroeconomics, especially fiscal and monetary systems. For example, the author examines how redefining a government’s approach to money could pave the way for an earlier and more impactful implementation of UBD, using insights from Modern Monetary Theory (MMT).
