However\, many of the reflections triggered by the events orga nized so far in the context of IYBSSD indicate a few main lines to make ba sic sciences a powerful tool for the whole society for a sustainable futur e.\n\nBasic sciences may offer concrete inputs to the elaboration\, evalua tion\, and validation of strategies and actions that are aimed at catalyzi ng sustainable development. However\, the complexity of the global problem s to tackle call for a collective and interdisciplinary approach that must include\, together with basic sciences and technology\, all other science s (social sciences\, formal sciences\, political sciences\, humanities\, a mong others) representing various communities of knowledge.\n\nThe basic s cience communities are committed to promote cooperation with the other sci entific communities and with the technology world to help UN Members and o ther policy makers to prioritize policy development\, action plans\, finan ce and investment and the delivery of services to stakeholders\, especiall y the most vulnerable and marginalized.\n\nScience communication and the d ialogue science-policymaking are essential elements for policy makers to b e able to benefit from and synergize with the scientific communities. Basi c sciences have a role in this process\, as they are the foundation of alm ost all applied sciences and can therefore contribute greatly to a better understanding of scientific opportunities and to develop solutions in supp ort of sustainable development.\n\nIn addition to celebrate the IYBSSD at the very place where it was proclaimed\, this event is meant to provide an overview on the present status of sciences for sustainability which\, alt hough progressing rapidly\, is characterized by scientific\, thematic\, ge ographical\, and organizational fragmentation that must be overcome. It ma y also offer the opportunity to initiate a reflection on the future of sci ences for sustainability and on a possible long-term follow-up of IYBSSD\, which would associate all sciences into a global effort based for sustain ability.\n\nScience has been a catalyst of dialogue throughout times of cr isis and uncertainty. Scientific cooperation did not stop at the iron curt ain in Europe in the past. The successful lessons yield valuable insights into how cooperation on science can enhance dialogue and effectiveness in times of crisis and contribute to mutual understanding and trust.
