The Commentary highlights a troubling disconnect between the magnitude of crisis and the political will to pursue transformative change. Legal hurdles, deep-rooted corporate agendas, and fleeting political priorities are key obstacles. Misinformation and greenwashing efforts stoke the flames of resistance to genuine action. Fossil fuel subsidies linger like unwanted houseguests, while GDP-driven models chase quick wins over sustainable gains. And despite global promises, crucial policies fall short. The new publication presents evidence of worsening trends, inadequate measures, and the EU’s leadership role in the urgent policy actions required globally.
