Rome G8+5 Legislators Forum
Italian Chamber of Deputies, 12th - 13th June 2009
On June 12, 2009 the Club of Rome is providing a briefing session to legislators and government officials from the G8 plus 5 countries. Among the contributors on the Club of Rome side will be OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría (video message), Drs. Ashok Khosla and Eberhard von Koerber, Co-Presidents of the Club of Rome, Anders Wijkman, Member of the European Parliament, Prof. Mohan Munashinghe, Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. An overview and conclusions will be provided by R. Martin Lees, Secretary General of the Club of Rome.
The world community confronts three profound and interconnected crises: the worst financial and economic crisis since the 1930s, the accelerating threat of irreversible climate change and a crisis of poverty, hunger and underdevelopment. New approaches are needed: we have reached a turning point in world affairs where previously entrenched ideas and policies are no longer effective. The goal of policy cannot simply be to recover to the previous path of economic growth and globalisation as this has proved to be unstable, unfair and environmentally unsustainable.
The economic, environmental and development problems which threaten the future are profoundly interconnected. Strategies to stabilise and reform the international financial and economic systems must therefore be consistent and mutually reinforcing with strategies to respond to the challenges of climate, energy, ecosystems and water, all within a broad perspective of sustainable world development.
A detailed documentation of this session will be soon provided on this site.
