DESERTEC - Clean Energy from Deserts
DESERTEC was initiated by the German Association of the Club of Rome and is a project supported by the Club of Rome together with associated scientists. The project proposes to use a proven technology, Concentrated Solar Power, to develop a source of clean and sustainable electricity supply for Europe (EU), the Middle East (ME) and North Africa (NA).
The DESERTEC project will entail the construction of a Concentrated Solar Power energy production grid in the MENA region along with ancillary power transmission networks throughout the EU-MENA region.
"The Club of Rome welcomes that this visionary and innovative clean and renewable energy concept is now being picked up by finance and industry", says Dr. Eberhard von Koerber, Co-President of the Club of Rome; "We hope that in particular political questions related to the reliability of supply from African countries and issues related to transmission lines to be built in a number of transit countries to transmit large volumes of electricity to consumers north of the Alps can be resolved. The Club of Rome regards DESERTEC as a potential driver for Trans-European Networks (TENs) and for the Mediterranean Initiative as recently started by the European Union. It could also be a long-term breakthrough for major CO2 reduction in Europe and North Africa."
Max Schön, President of the German Club of Rome and member of the Advisory Board of the DESERTEC Foundation underlines: "DESERTEC is a concept developed by scientists, politicians and economists around the Mediterranean Sea (EUMENA). It has the potential to slow down or even to stop climate change and to make a big contribution to bring back balance to our world."
