Cristovam Buarque

 

Current Senator of the Brazilian Republic from the party PDT.  Ph.D in Economics from the Sorbonne University in Paris, a mechanical engineer graduated from the University of Pernambuco and Professor of the University of Brasília.  He founded the NGO Missão Criança, which promotes the School Scholarship program for more than a thousand families. Was Rector of the University of the Brasilia and Governor of the Federal District.

 

In 2003 he served as Minister of Education in the mandate of President Lula da Silva and in 2006 was a candidate for the Presidency of Brazil. It is an Advisor at various international agencies within the United Nations, UNDP and has also become Member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium. He is Vice-Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Chairman of the Special Subcommittee for the 2012 Summit Rio + 20.
