Enough is Enough. It’s time for a new kind of economy.

[1]Never-ending economic growth is not possible on a finite planet; nor is it improving the lives of people in wealthy nations. In Enough Is Enough [1], Rob Dietz and Dan O’Neill lay out a visionary but realistic alternative to the perpetual pursuit of economic growth—an economy where the goal is enough, not more. They explore specific strategies to conserve natural resources, stabilize population, reduce inequality, fix the financial system, create jobs, and more—all with the aim of maximizing long-term well-being instead of short-term profits.

It’s a truth we can no longer escape or ignore: We have hit the wall, economically, socially, and environmentally and it’s causing poverty, financial meltdowns, and wealth inequality. We’re causing long‐term environmental damage, and it’s not improving people’s lives.

  • Of  the  7  billion  people  on  earth,  2.7  billion  are  scraping  by  on  less  than  $2  per  day
  • 394 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are threatening to destabilize the global climate
  • The United States public debt is $15 trillion, an unfathomable sum of money to be paid back by the next generation
  • 2 percent of adults owning more than half of all household wealth in the world
  • Four hundred ocean zones devoid of life, with the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico estimated to cover almost as much area as the U.S. state of New Jersey.

[1]Pursuit of perpetual economic growth is a bad idea. For a better idea, read Enough Is Enough: Building a Sustainable Economy in a World of Finite Resources [1]. In 240 engaging pages, Rob Dietz and Dan O’Neill accomplish something significant: they debunk the growth-obsessed economic orthodoxy and provide a blueprint for changing the economy so that it works for people and the planet.

Ian Johnson, Secretary General of the Club of Rome comments: “Highly Recommended Reading: ‘Enough is Enough’ manages to be readable, enjoyable and substantive all at the same time: a rare feat. Essential reading for those wanting to understand the travails of our world and how to fix them. The authors are to be congratulated on a lucid, sensible and yet profound book”

Noam Chomsky says, “Humans seem to be intent on confirming the argument of biologist Ernst Mayr that higher intelligence may be a lethal mutation. But the grim prognosis is not inevitable. This lucid, informed, and highly constructive book not only outlines where we are heading, but also shows that with the will to act, solutions can be found to build a steady-state economy geared to meeting human needs.”
