In commemoration of Ruud F.M. Lubbers
With deep sadness the Club of Rome has learnt about the passing away of Ruud F.M. Lubbers, Former Prime Minister of the Netherlands and Honorary Member of the Club of Rome.
Ruud Lubbers served as the Dutch Prime Minister from 1982 until 1994. He was UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from 2001 to 2005. In the follow-up of the Earth Summit in 1992, Lubbers engaged with the Earth Charter Initiative in cooperation with Mikhail Gorbachev and Maurice Strong. Lubbers was an active member of the international Earth Charter Commission and reached out, especially to youth in the Netherland, with the message of the Earth Charter for a sustainable and peaceful world. Ruud Lubbers was born 7 May 1939 and died 14 February 2018. He was married to Ria Hoogeweegen and had two sons and one daughter.
